BISHOPS COUNCIL PLANS DHARNAS
AND FASTING IN PROTEST
The Kerala Catholic Bishops’ Council said
here on Thursday that the Catholic Church felt cheated by the Left Democratic
Front government, which was now backtracking on its policy to reduce liquor
availability in the State.President of the council Archbishop Soosa Pakiam M.
told a press conference here that KCBC would stage dharnas and fasts to protest
against the liquor policy, which would only strengthen the grip of liquor on
society.
The council also plans to bring out a
clear policy on liquor and will strengthen the anti-liquor awareness campaign,
he said. The council also said the Church recognised the rights of transgenders.
They were created in the likeness of God and had rights like every other human
being, said the Archbishop. They needed to be cared for as they were an
exploited lot and the Catholic Church would take their side.He said the Church
leaders had not intended to visit BJP leader Amit Shah on his last visit to
Kerala. But he was a guest and it was a policy to receive any visitor with
dignity and courtesy, he added.
