PAKISTAN WOMAN MP HARASSED IN PARLIAMENT

lawmaker threatened to self-immolate after she was harassed by male colleagues
in parliament, telling AFP that the widely-publicised incident shows how laws
to protect women are not being enforced.Nusrat Sahar Abbasi, an MP in Sindh province,
spoke of her fury after provincial minister Imdad Pitafi invited her to his
private chambers on the floor of the assembly Friday in comments seen as sexual
harassment in conservative Pakistan.She said she protested strongly but the
deputy speaker of the assembly, also a woman, refused to take any action.A
frustrated Abbasi was then pictured Saturday holding a small bottle said to be
of petrol and threatening to self-immolate if action was not taken.
Federal party
chiefs were forced to intervene as the incident exploded on social media, with
Pitafi finally caving to the pressure and apologising in the assembly while
offering Abbasi a chador, or veil, as a mark of his respect. Abbasi told
AFP Tuesday that the incident was now "over", but that it poses a
question on the implementation of laws protecting women from such sexual
harassment."Their implementation is still a dream," Abbasi said."Even
us, the parliamentarians are not safe from gender biases and harassment,"
she said.Pakistani women have spent decades fighting for their rights in a
deeply conservative country where so-called honour killings and acid attacks
remain commonplace.Pakistan has passed several laws to increase protections
available to women in recent years, some at the provincial level, but critics
have warned that without proper enforcement they will have little impact. Last
year a bill passed in Punjab province redefined "violence" to include
"any offense committed against a women", prompting an Islamic religious
body to protest that men should be allowed to "lightly beat" their
wives.

സിന്ധ് പ്രവിശ്യയിലെ എംപി നുസ്‌റത്ത് സഹര്‍ അബ്ബാസിനാണ് പ്രവിശ്യയിലെ മന്ത്രിയായ ഇംദാദ് പിതാഫി സഭയിലെ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ചേംബറിലേക്ക് വിളിപ്പിച്ച് അപമാനിച്ചത്. മന്ത്രി എംപിയോട് കയര്‍ത്ത്‌ സംസാരിക്കുകയും ലൈംഗീംക വിമര്‍ശനവും നടത്തി. എന്നാല്‍ ഈ സമയം സഭയിലുണ്ടായിരുന്ന വനിതാ ഡെപ്യൂട്ടി സ്പീക്കര്‍ സംഭവത്തില്‍ ഒരു നടപടിയും സ്വീകരിച്ചില്ലെന്ന് നുസ്‌റത്ത് സഹര്‍ അബ്ബാസി പറഞ്ഞു
സംഭവത്തില്‍ നടപടി ഉണ്ടായില്ലെങ്കില്‍ ആത്മഹത്യചെയ്യുമെന്ന് ഭീഷണി മുഴക്കി സഹര്‍ അബ്ബാസ് സോഷ്യല്‍ മീഡിയയില്‍ പെട്രോള്‍ കുപ്പി പിടിച്ചുള്ള ഫോട്ടോ പോസ്റ്റ് ചെയ്തു. ഫോട്ടോ സോഷ്യല്‍ മീഡിയയില്‍ പ്രചരിച്ച് പ്രതിഷേധമുയര്‍ന്നതോടെ ഭരണകക്ഷി പാര്‍ട്ടി നേതാക്കള്‍ ഇടപെട്ടു. മന്ത്രി സഭയില്‍ മാപ്പുപറയുമെന്ന് ഇവര്‍ സഹര്‍ അബ്ബാസിക്ക് ഉറപ്പു നല്‍കി. ഇതോടെ സംഭവം ഇപ്പോള്‍ അവസാനിച്ചെന്ന് സഹര്‍ അബ്ബാസി പറഞ്ഞു. സ്ത്രീകളെ പരിരക്ഷിക്കുന്നതിനുള്ള നിയമം നടപ്പാക്കാന്‍ ..
ഇവര്‍ സഹര്‍ അബ്ബാസിക്ക് ഉറപ്പു നല്‍കി. ഇതോടെ സംഭവം ഇപ്പോള്‍ അവസാനിച്ചെന്ന് സഹര്‍ അബ്ബാസി പറഞ്ഞു. സ്ത്രീകളെ പരിരക്ഷിക്കുന്നതിനുള്ള നിയമം നടപ്പാക്കാന്‍ ആവശ്യപ്പെടുമ്പോള്‍ ലൈംഗീകപരമായി അപമാനിക്കുന്നതില്‍ നിഗൂഢതയുണ്ടെന്ന് അവര്‍ ആരോപിച്ചു. ഈ നിയമം നടപ്പാക്കുന്നത് ഒരു സ്വപ്‌നമായി തുടരും. പാര്‍ലമെന്റില്‍ പോലും സ്ത്രീകള്‍ സുരക്ഷിതരല്ല എന്നാണ് ഈ സംഭവം വ്യക്തമാക്കുന്നത്. സ്ത്രീകള്‍ക്കു നേരെയുള്ള ആസിഡ് ആക്രമണങ്ങളും കൊലപാതകങ്ങളും പാകിസ്താനില്‍ സര്‍വ്വസാധാരണമായിക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുകയാണ്. അടുത്തിടെ സ്ത്രീകളെ സംരക്ഷിക്കുന്നതിനുള്ള നിരവധി നിയമങ്ങള്‍ നിലവില്‍ വന്നു. എന്നാല്‍ അധികൃതര്‍ കേസുകളില്‍ കാര്യക്ഷമമായി ഒന്നും ചെയ്യുന്നില്ലെന്നും അവര്‍ പറഞ്ഞു
