SCHOOLS IN KERALA REOPENED

2011-Schools in Kerala reopened: 4.5 lakh children joined class 1

After two months of summer vacation, schools in Kerala reopened on Wednesday,1st June,2011. This year as many 4.5 lakh kids joined class one and among them the number of kids who joined public schools is not known. This time too the government is not ready to implement the Right to Education Act. The rule, which had to be implemented the previous year itself, was not implemented this year citing delay in making arrangements.

Though the previous LDF government took a decision to make Malayalam the first language and issued an order, the present government is not ready to implement it. More studies would be conducted before implementing the rule and that would delay it further. The distribution of textbook is also not complete. But in majority of the places, books have reached the district distribution centers. As the printing is also complete the distribution would be made soon.  This year new textbooks have also been introduced. As usual renewed social studies book has created row over some statement on Catholic Church. The government also appointed a committee, led by Babu Paul, to probe the same. The text books to government and aided schools are free. But in central schools, the books wound cost more than Rs 1000 for a single child. The statewide `praveshnotsavam' was held at Thiruvananathapuram Cotton Hills HS. `Praveshanotsavams' are also being held in district and sub-district centres.
