EVER GREEN 'REVOLUTION'

Farmers must work to increase productivity of their lands in a sustained manner, thus bringing about an 'evergreen' revolution. M.S Swaminathan, agriculture scientist said. He was speaking at the Prof.K.V Thomas Endowment National workshops organised by Sacred Heart college on Thursday 3 rd March,2011.
The farmers must optimally utilise  technological advancements in agriculture. Sikh farmers understand the importance of technological innovation thus increasing productivity of different crops. Dr Swaminathan said farmers must be extended help in marketing their produce and assured of good remuneration. There also has to be a sufficient number of go downs to store crops, to prevent wastage of food. Farmers enthusiasm too is important. They must no go in for genetic homogencity since their crops would become vulnerable to particular diseases. Variety of crops is thus very important.
India needs plenty to go down to store its food grains safely.M.S Swaminathan said that organic farming needs more research support than one using chemical fertilizers. The emphasis must be on growing inter-crops and producing more from less land".
He expressed concern at climate change worsening floods and drought across the globe. The 2004 tsunami had shown how mangroves could be an effective bio-shield against many calamities and rising sea level. They deposited nutrients, attracting more fish to the coast
