INDIA AND CANADA SIGN
NUCLEAR AGREEMENT
India and Canada on 28th June,2010 signed a civil nuclear co-operation agreement. Prime Minister Manmohan singh said” It reflects the change in International realities” Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper also welcomed the agreement. He said that the agreement will provide access for Canada’s nuclear indistry to India’s expanding nuclear market. Both nations also agreed to try and take the bilateral trade up 15 Billion Doller in the next five years, up from the current level of around 5 billion doller.
Other areas in which they agreed to increase cooperation are earth sciences and minig transportation, natural resources, infrastructure, agriculture and agri food cooperation and higher education.

MAOIST AMBUSH IN CHHATTISGARH
MAOIST AMBUSH IN CHHATTISGARH
Twenty six personnel of the 39 Battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force were killed in a maoist ambush in Chhattisgarah’s Narayanpur district on Tuesday,28th June,2010.
70 CRPF personal were conducting a Road Opening operation(ROP) on foot on the Narayanpur-orcha road when the attack occurred.
The Narayanpur-orcha road is considered to be the gateway to Abujhmad, a 4000 sq km forested area that has been declared a liberated zone” by the maoist.
On April 6 this year, 75 CRPF Solders and a head constable of the chhattisgarh police were killed in an early morning Ambush in Dantewada district. On May 8, eight men of CRPF were killed in Narayanpur when naxals blew up a mine-proof vehicle
The number of lives that have been lost in the battle against the maoists-civilian and paramilitary is alarming. It is evident that the paramilitary forces are inadequate to meet the challenge.
The government says maoistsare our people and we should not use the armed forces to control them.The CRPF personnel are also our people, their lives are equally important, they also have families to take caree of. In two months, we have lost more than 100 of them. Why is the centre not taking any steps to rein in the maoists. No other country will tolerate such inhumane attackson its forces. It not known how many more lives will besacrificed before the government decides to act.
Lack of development in back ward areas such as Jharkhand,Chhattisgarh and parts of west Bengal is gthe main reason for the growth of Maoism.
The absence of development in the tribal areas of these states led to the growth of maoism and violence. Unless the government and other agencies took up the developmental issues of these back ward regions, militancy and violence cannot be stopped.
Union government and state governments must start some schools and vocational training centres in the areas to provide education and employment skills to the tribal people and other backward sections of society.The various religious sections must help the poor people in the back areas.

DOCTOR’S DAY
Doctor’s day, is celebrated on July 1 every year, and is a time for us to celebrate and acknowledge the efforts and achievements of doctors of our country.
First of July is the birth day of Dr B.C Roy, who was born on this day in the year 1882. Dr Roy’s dedication to the practice of this noble profession and his contributions to the field of health as a doctor,politician and administrator are remembered on this day.
Doctor’s Day this pays tribute to Dr.B.C Roy and all doctor’s like him, who spend their lives helping others. The nation has honoured Dr B.C Roy with Bharat Ratna and the B.C Roy National Award instituted in 1976.
All doctors are aware that theirs is a high pressure job where is small professional mistake can lead to disastrous consequence that can affect a patients life and those of his entire family. For doctors, it is is an opportunity to rededicate themselves to their demanding job. Unfortunately, the medical profession to day is witnessing a rapidly deteriorating patient-doctor relationship, with people losing faith in their doctors abilities.
It is true that the medical profession carries a heavy responsibility with it, but people need to realise that the doctor is a normal human being and like everyone else, doctors too need appreciation for their work and efforts. Doctors day is the perfect time for patients to acknowledge their doctor and appreciate their ability to succour and heal

FUEL PRICE HIKE
FUEL PRICE HIKE
The opposition parties on Saturday 26th June,2010 hit the streets in many states enforcing strikes in kerala,orissa and west Bengal, in protest against the governments decision to hike fuel prices. The hartal called by the LDF on Saturday was total and peaceful in kerala. Shops, business establishments and banks remained closed. Government offices too recorded thin attendance.KSRTC too did not operate service from any depot. The Hartal supporters staged marches.
There was no disruption in train services, but rail passengers from outside the state. Who alighted at different stations in the state had a tough time reaching their destnation. Air passengers too had a similar experience.
BJP observed’protest day’ across the state on Saturday objecting to the hike in the price of patrol,diesel,kerosene and cooking gas. Demonstrations and meeing were organised at the local level in different parts of the state.
The increase in the prices of patrol, diesel and LPG will have a cascading effect. It will result in the prices of all essential commodities going up.With of inflation already high,the decision to increase the prices of petroleum products will add to the misery of the common man.
The prices of all essential commodities will increase due to a rise in the transportation costs.For senior citizens, life has become unbearable as they have no source of income and the interest rates on bank deposists have come down. Food prices have already gone up. The common man, for whome the so-called high growth rate has little significance is bound to be affected badly by the fuel price hike.

The gap between this requirement and the resources to meet it remained unfilled till the advent of internet. Now various linguistic sections of India living in other countries have access to their language through the internet. TRIBUTE TO ADOOR PANKAJAM
The veteran actor Adoor Pankajam passed away at her residence in Adoor on Saturday 26th,2010.
Pankajam, along with her elder sister, Adoor Bhavani who died on October 2009, had given life to several chactors on Malayalam silver screen as supporting actor.
She was honoured by Kerala Sangetha Nataka Akademy in 2008. She is survived by son Ajayan, who is cinema and television serial artiste.
Adoor Pankajam had to her credit as many as 412 movies. She began her acting career as a theatre artiste
The body was shifted toAdoor Town Hall by 12 noon on Sunday 27th June. Hundreads of people paid homage to the departed soul.The funeral procession was taken out from the town Hall toaround 1.30 pm. Ajayan performed the last rituals and lit the funeral pyre .Her first cinema was Veshappinte vili” Last cinema was the”Kunju Koonan”. She born in 1935. Father: Pannivizha- Parapurathu Kunjiraman Pillai- Mother Kunuoonjamma.

Indian Home Minister P Chidambaram arrived Pakistan on Friday 25th June,2010 to press Islamaabad to realise the “gravity of the situation’ and begin prosecuting the masterminds of the November 2008 Mumbai attacks, including Lashkar e- Taiba founder Hafiz saeed.
Home Minister pointed out that of the seven persons arraigned for the 26/11 attacks.The seven arrested by Pakistan for involvement in Mumbai attack are not masterminds.The Pakistani administration realises that the world will not forgive them if they don’t act.

India is an exceptional country with so many languages having’old and remarkable literatures,both written and oral.Sanskrit,with its 3000 year old tradition had produced an unrivalled number of literary works. Tamil goes back to proto dravidian- Tamil as the language of the thousands of short texts in the Indus script, written during 2600-1700 BCE. Many critical scholars agree that even the Rigveda, collected in the Indus Valley about 1000 BCE, has at least half a dozen Dravidian loan words.
Tamil as one of the old secular languages of India.Tamil was also spoken in six to seven countries and enjoyed a constitutional position there.The Tamil literature has around 2000 years old,portrayed the human experience in a rich fashion.

The Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation would be authorised to take over the manimala estatee at kuttiyadi in Kozhikodu district(131) acres for developing a cononut industrial park.

WORLD CLASSICAL TAMIL CONFERENCE
President Pratibha Patil inaugurated the five day classical Tamil Conference on Wednesday 23rd June,2010. The president said Tamil has the oldest literature among the living language of the world. Many concepts intrinsic to India’s society and critical to its polity were found in Tamil discourse over the millennia. The message of peace, uni versality and the spirit of of equality was propounded in sangam poem(purananooru) more than 2000 years ago.
President, presented the Kalaignar m. Karunanidhi classical Tamil award to Prof.Asko Parpola, renowned indologist for his work on the Dravidian hypothesis in the interpretation of the Indus script.Tamil is an old living language with an extra ordinary volume of literaturee and grammar.
The president said Tirrukkural, written by Thiruvalluvar was a remarkable treatise on ethics. Silapathikaram and Manimekali were works of excellence, as were the epics of Jeevakachintamani, Kamba Ramyanam, and the soul- stirring hymns of Nayanmars and Alvars.The poem and songs of Subramania Bharathi evoked in the minds of the people” deep feelings of patriotism during our freedom struggle. History of the Tamil is our nation’s pride. The president said the Tamil ethos based on pluralism, tolerace and humanistic approach had contributed in a variety of ways to india’s progress and shaping its identity as a nation that was rich in art, music, archetecture and literature.

The world Tamil Conference must come out with practical solutions to preserve the heritage of language instead of mere resolutions and empty slogans. Any solution has to include the youth who form the majority of the population.
The Tamil Nadu government has set an example for other states, especially Kerala. Malayalam Language is also rich in literature and culture.The Malayalam conference will help in inducing pride and awarness among the young on the rich cultural heritage.

LACK OF TOILETS AT SCHOOLS
A Dvision Bench of the Kerala High court on Monday 21 st June,2010 expressed concern over the lack of toilets and urinal facilities in government and aided schools in the state.
It was shocking that there were government schools, that too girls schools in the state capital that did not have toilet facilities.
The court observed that the situation in the other districts was”quite’ alarming. It also expressed surprize as to how the students and staff managed with out these basic amenities.
The directive came on a writ petition filed by the secretary of the kerala Sastra Sahitya Parishad,vadakkanchery zone in march 2009.
The Deputy Directors of Educations were directed ensure that all basic amenities were put in place in all schools. As per the circular of the ministry of Rural Development, schools should have a 20-40 urinals and 80-120 toilets.

SILENT VALLY
Silent valley is treasure trove of flora and fauna. There will not hear the song of the cicadus in this vally- all around is quiet. It is home to the largest population of lion-tailed macaque, an endangered species of primate. It is one of the last un disturbed tracts of the south western ghats montane rain forests and trropical moist evergreen forests in India.
Palakkad is known as the gate way of kerala because it opens kerala to the rest of the countes through a 25 mile inside gap in the western ghats known is the palakkad gap. Incidentally the latter happens to be the laargest mountain pass in the world.
In the north-eastern corner of palakkad lies the famed silent valley. The silent valley is spread over 237 square kilometres and happens to be among the oldest stretches of rainforests in world. It is possibly the only region in the country with a relatively un disturbed evolution history of at least 50 million years.
The Mahabharata tells the story of pandaas losing the game of dice, and sent in to exile for 13 years. Legend has it that the pandavas had it that the pandavas had spent the better part of these years in the silent valley.
The clamour of the cicadus is conspicuously absent there. It is this silence that made in British name’ Silent vally’ in1847.
A power project that was coming up on the Kuntipuzha river in the 1970’s had triggered off one of the fiercest environmental campaigns the country has ever known. The then prime minister IndiraGandhi stepped in and stopped the project from coming up.
In 1984, the Silennt vally was declared National Park. Mannarkkad is the nearest town from the silent vally. About 22 kilometres from mannarkkad is Mukkali- the starting point for a trip to silent vally. The Silent vally is divided in to four parts of which only Sairandri is open to visitors. Journey from Mukkali to Sairandhri takes an hour. In 1847, Robert Wright made the first investigations in the silent vally area.

COMMUNAL HARMONY

BHOPAL GAS TRAGEDY
BHOPAL GAS TRAGEDY
(CENTRE TO PAY RS250 CRORE TO CLEAN TOXIC WASTE)
The Centre has decided tyo spend about Rs 250 crore towards complete remediation.The entire process of decontaminating the one million tonnes of toxic waste at the site will be completed in two to three years, according to sources at the fourth meeting of the current group of ministers on the bhopal gas leak disaster,which met on Sunday while the centre will offer funding and technical support.
The National Environmental engineering Research Institute (NEERI), which made a presentation at the meeting, has recommended that the decontaminated soil be buried between concrete slabs at the site itself.
Sunday’s (20th June,2010) meeting focussed on the environment aspects of the disaster, including remediation of contaminated soil, contaminated water, the toxic waste etc.

REHABILITATION OF THE BHOPAL GAS TRAGEDY VICTIMS
The Group of Ministers(GoM) on Bhopal which met on Fridat 18th June,2010 and submit its reports. The GoM’s recommendations classified broadly under three heads- legal issues,compensation and remediation measures/ disposal of waste.
The planning commission is understood to have released Rs 982 crore to the MadhyaPradesh government for rehabilitation of Bhopal gas tragedy victims. The state government accepted that 16,000 people had died and 5,000 women were widowed in the 1984 disaster due to the toxic waste that polluted the environmeng in and around the abandoned union carbide factory in Bhopal. The action plan for rehabilitation is divided in to four components- medical, economic,social and environmental.

PROF.JOHN KURAKAR INAUGURATED THE READERS FESTIVAL
Prof. John Kurakar, president, Kerala Kavya Kala Sahithy inaugurated the Readers day Festival and award ddistribution function held at Buisness Champer,Kottarakara on 19th June,2010 at 3 pm.The State government observes June 19 as the day of reading every year with weeklong celebrations to honour the contribution of P.N Panicker to the Library movement.
Prof.Kurakar said that people should engage in reading not to while away time, but to ignite their minds. Function was organised by Mithra Mandalam- a cultural association. Mr Kurakar again said Readidng should be intended for growth of culturaal out look and social change. He said the Late P.N Panicker was a man who worked with such an out look. Panicker also travelled widely across the state to promote reading, especially by establishing rural libraries. He again said’ while reading enhances creative thinking, visual medium limitsimagination. ‘Reading will help character formation. Literature should be included in the sylabus of professonal courses’ he said.

POLICE PROTECTION FOR C.M.S COLLEE
A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court on Friday 18th June,2010,criticised the police for their failure to prevent the violence on the campus of C.M.S College, Kottayam.The court observed that the incidents that took place on the campus were’atrocious’ and that it was really’ a shame’ that such incidents were happening in the sate.
The violence indulged in by the agitating SFI students on the campus would show that they had taken law in to the hands.
The CMS College managements is firm on its decision to implement the disciplinary action taken against those responsibele for instigating violence on the campus. Some students has been engaging in un lawful activities in the college. Despite repeat warnings of the college principal. On an average, out of the possible 180 working days, nearly 70 are lost due to student activism. This is deplorable.
Kerala Prfadesh Congress Committee condemned the violence and destruction of properties at CMS College by SFI activists. The Congress Committee said the incident was a reflection of the CPI’s approach to interests of religious minorites.
The Catholic Federation of India called for compensation for the loss suffered by the Collee authorites on account of the violent incidents. Prof.John Kurakar, President, Kerala Kavya Kala Sahithy said that the government and the Communist Party of India(Marxist) should give compensation to the College authorities for the loss on account of the SFI students violent incidents.

The Kerala state pollution control board has issued a warning order has issued a warning against polluting the Sasthamcotta fresh water lake in Kollam by discharging poisonous and noxious matter in to the water body.
A board notification issued on Wednesday,16th June,2010 waarned against polluting the fresh water from hotels commercial establishments, industries and others in to drains or pathways leading to the lake.
Letting sewage,mining of sand, granite, laterite,clay or soil and storage of materials with in 500 from the lake periphery have been prohibited.
Agricultural activity with in 100 m of the periphery of the lake has been banned. Fishing from the lake using explosives, construction of sewge disposalfacility with in 500m of the lake’s periphery and disposal of overflow from septic tanks in to lend other than through soak pit also been prohibited.

The Athirappilly hydro electrical project will be a recipe for environmental disaster. The Athirappilly forest area is another silent vally that needs to be protected. The Kerala government had proposed a 163-MW power project across the Athirappilly river in Thrissur district.
The Kerala state Bio diversity Board had expressed its concern over the loss of biodiversity on implementing the project. Many environmentalist had expressed the fear that the project would permanently destroy the ecosystem.
Kerala Kavya Kala Sahithy environmental wing president Prof.John Kurakar expressed his concern over loss ecosystem on implementing the hydro electric project. Various associations and environmental groups and leaders opposed the project.

SOUTH KYRGYSTAN TARGETING THE MINORITY USHEKS
Russsian president Dmitry Medvedev ordered the Russian Emergency situations ministry to fly 120 tonnes of relief aid to kyrgzstan.
Usbekistan closed the border with Kyrgystan after receiving 83,000 ethnic Usbek residents of Kyrgzstan who fled violence. Usbek authorities said they could not accommodate any more refugees even as the United Nations estimated that up to 1,00,000 people were waiting to cross the Kyrgystan border to Usbekistan.
Kyrgyzstan’s interim government declared on Wednesday(16th June,2010) a day of mourning for the victims of ethnic violence targeting the Uzbek population. Death toll could be higher in Kyrgyzstan.
