TO PROTECT SASTHAMCOTTA LAKE
(WORLD WATER DAY-MARCH-22)
Environment activists in the Kollam district sat on the bed of the shrinking Sasthamcotta Lake and went on fast on Monday 22nd March 2010 to observe world water Day as part of their continuing agitation demanding the protection of the lake which is the biggest fresh water lake in the state.
Those under taking the fast took a pledge to protect the lake. The fast was under the banner of the Kerala Kavya Kala Sahithy and Sasthamcotta Lake protection Action Council. People from all age groups and various walks of life joined the fast.
No kind of encroachments on the lake should be allowed. A total sanitation pro gramme should also be implemented in sasthamcotta to prevent the Lake from getting polluted. The present picture of the Lake was a heart rending sight.
The protection of the Sasthamcotta Lake was not an issue pertaining to kollam district alone but one that concerned the state. Steps on
a war-footing should be taken to prevent the Lake from going extinct.
The programme was presided over by Kavya Kala Sahithy president Prof. John Kurakar. The Environment activists Prof. R. Ganga prasad, Mr Odanavattom Vijaya Prakash, Mr Kunjachan Paruthiyara, and G. Balakrishan Nair spoke

STUDENTS DEVELOP
ECO- FRIENDLY ENGINE
A group of Mechanical Engineering students of Sarabhai Institute of Science and Technology have developed and electromagnetic engine that promises a clean alternative to fossil fuel powered vehicles. A team of four students modified a 60 cc sprayer engine to demonstrate the electromagnetic principal.
The engine operates on the repulsive force between two magnets, one embedded in the piston and other on top of the cylinder.
The electromagnet on the cylinder head is powered by a battery that can be charged using solar panels. The engine is controlled by an electronic gadget that acts the accelerator. The students demonstrated that any patrol or diesel powered engine can be modified for electromagnetic propulsion. Such a modified engine will be free of noise and air pollution. The cost of modification may range between Rs 20000 and 30,000.
The team took about two years to design the engine. Electromagnetic engines are more efficient than servo motors' The electro magnetic engine had the potential to revolutionise the automobile industry. Once the engine is suitably modified, the fuel tank, timer chain, camshaft, air filter, fuel injection system and exhaust mechanism can be dispensed with, there by freeing up space and reducing the weight of the vehicle considerably. The students are planning to file a patent application for the design

CURRENCY GARLAND
CURRENCY GARLAND
the currency garland presented to Uttar Pradesh chief minister Ms Mayawati at a rally organized to mark the BSP's 25th anniversary has generated much heat with the congress and other parties. Ms Mayawati should understand that symbolism of any kind will not improve the living condition of people. The BSP workers, who presented currency garlands to Mayawati on Monday 15th March and Wednesday 17th March, 2010. Ms Mayawati as well as her followers should realize that such activities will not in any way, enhance the prominence of the leader. It will lead to a decline in the fame gained hitherto.
It is indeed shameful that in a country where thousands are starving, a political leader should embarrass us with such uncalled for display of money. It reflects the current trend in politics. Is not a simple garland of flowers enough to show respect to a leader? What is need for such vulgar display of wealth?

PARAVUR SYNAGOGUE
PARAVUR SYNAGOGUE
The Paravur synagogue was declared a protected monument in 1996. The dilapidated Jewish synagogue in North paravur, Kerala. One of the oldest in India,is set for restoration. Rs63 lakh will be spent to restore it”
the date of arrival of the Jews in the Malabar coast has not been precisely established yet. Some accounts date it back to the days of king Solomon, while others place it in the I st century CE.
North paravur, a small town about 20 km north of kochi, was one of the places where the Cochin Jews, as they were collectively known, settled.
The Cochin Jews like the other Jews in India never faced any antisemitism and were an integral of part of the multi-cultural milieu. As the 10th century copperplates of Bhaskara Ravi Varman indicate, some of them even enjoyed special privileges.
The early synagogues built in Kerala are now lost and only those built after the 16th century survive. Studies state that there were eight jewish communities in Kerala and each had their own synagogues. The extant one could be found in Kochi, Ernakulam, Mala, North Paravur and Chennamangalam. The Mattancherry synagogue in Kochi is the most well known of them.
The Paravur synagogue located on the Jew street of the town was built in 1615 CE, but traditional accounts hold that it was built on the ruins of an early synagogue constructed in 1615 CE, making it the earliest. The services in the paravur synagogue continued till 1988.
The International survey of Jewish monuments (ISJM), an independent non- profit educational organization, reports that the original bimah ( an elevated wooden plat form from which the Torah is read) and the ark ( a chest or cupboard in the synagogue where the Torah scrolls are kept), were taken from paravur to Israel in 1995. Though the paravur synagogue was declared a protected monument in 1996, the structure was not well maintained. It was only last year that the Department of Archeology took possession of it.
The Jews started immigrating to Israel in 1949, after the state of Israel was formed. By 1954, most of them had moved out Kerala severally affecting the up keep of the Jewish heritage structures.
The idea to conserve Jewish heritage sites in Kerala was mooted in the 1990's and Chennamangalam synagogue was the first major site to be renovated by the Department of Archeology in 2005.

RAJYA SABHA PASSES WOMEN'S RESERVATION BILL
RAJYA SABHA PASSES
WOMEN'S RESERVATION BILL
The Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, 9th march, 2010 took “ a historic step by voting (191 for and 1 against) to amend the constitution, providing one third reservation of seats in parliament and state Assemblies for women.
The House recorded its vote at 7.25 pm, with almost the entire House supporting the Bill.
The Bill has to be passed by Lok Sabha and ratified by 50 percent of the state before it comes in to effect. While the passage of the Bill was smooth the process itself started on a stormy note. Marshals ringed the chair and the official table target of attacks by dissenting members- four from Samajwadi party (SP) and one each of the Janata Dal( United) Rashtrya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Lok Jana shakti party(LJP) who were physically evicted. Earlier the House voted to suspend them for the remaining session for their behavior on Monday 8th march.
The Bahujan Samaj Party walked out before voting, disagreeing with current Bill, While SP and RJD members went out after discussions demanding revocation of their party colleagues suspension.
The opposition criticised the floor management in the last two days that led to frequent disruptions. Dr Manmohan Singh, intervened twice. He recalling the contribution made by the Late CPI leader, Geeta Mukherjee, who headed the parliamentary committee that studied the first version of the Bill in 1996, he described the current development as” momentous in the long journey in the empowerment of women that would allow the country realize the full potential and social and economic development” He said” It is a historic step, a giant step.
Initiating the debate, leader of the opposition Mr Arun Jaitly said one third reservation was the best option and it was proven in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Rwanda where the percentage of women representation was greater compared to advanced countries, which either had a list system or fixed quotas for parties to allocate seats. Jayanti Natarajan, who heads the parliamentary committee that scrutinized the Bill, said no other party had either the courage or political will to push this legislation which was a step forward to the move by Rajive Gandhi, who reserved one third seats in panchyats and local bodies for women.
Brinda Karat (CPI-M) said experience of panchayats and local bodies showed that women had worked for the uplift of the village and community. The tendency of proxy politics was a reflection of the male- domination in society.
March 9, 2010 will remain a historic day for our Parliamentary democracy. The Rajya Sabha has convincingly voted for the women's Reservation Bill providing 33 percent reservation to women in parliament and the state legislation Assemblies. Equal credit goes to the BJP and the Left Parties. With out their support and co operation, the congress could not have passed the Bill. All women who deserved to get elected have been well accepted and promoted to top posts as well. The need of the hour is social, educational and economic empowerment of women. All leaders talk about the need to empower women.
Unprecedented scenes are quite common in Indian parliament. What a razzle- dazzle, political parties always say that they respect women and encourage them. But on Monday they were even attacking the Rajya Sabha chairman. Thus Indian democracy lost a wonderful opportunity to pass the historic women's Bill. It was tragic that on the centenary of international Women's Day our MP's failed to recognize the event. The international community celebrated the occasion by choosing Kathrine Bigelow as the best director of her movie “ The Hurt Locker” She is the first women to have won the Golden Knight in the History of Oscar awards. At least, the Oscar award selection committee brought credit to women on the international women's Day.
The Prime minister maintained that the' near unanimity' between the government and the opposition reached on the Bill was a living proof that heart of the Indian democracy was sound and in right place. The Prime minister also thanked leaders of the opposition parties for their support.
Sonia Gandhi asked Lalu Prasad' Whether his wife Rabri Devi, who was the chief minister of Bihar and his seven daughter would support him on this issue?' should I ring up Rabri Devi to know her view on the Bill . Him. To this Lalu just laughed in replay.Sonia Gandhi asked.
Sonia again asked Mulayam singh yadav and Lalu Prasad” The opposition bench particularly the BJP for their support and co-operation. If they co-operate, why can't you? Sonia said that he government had never thought of backing out from its move.
Credit for this Bill must be given primarily to congress president Sonia Gandhi, whose unequivocal advocacy of bill helped quell the misgiving with in a section of its male leadership, as well as Prime minister Manmohan singh. But the applause must also go to the Bharatiya Janta party and the left, which put the politics of oppositionism aside to help the government pass the 108th constitutional amendment in the upper house on Tuesday 9th march 2010.

MISSING GIRLS IN EAST ASIA
UNDP-REPORT
In East Asia- more boys are born than girls. Women die from health and nutrition neglect- is growing in the Asia Pacific. Birth gender disparity is greatest in East Asia, Where 119 boys are born for every 100 girls. A report brought out by the united nations development programme to mark the International Women's Day.
One-tenth of women in the region report being assaulted by their partners, and a majority of women who do work up to 85 percent of south Asia's working women- are engaged in unstable low-end work in the informal economy. Few women hold property. Although women predominate in agriculture, they head only 7 percent of farms compared to 20 percent in most other region of the world..
The region is far behind where it could be on basic issues such as protecting women from violence, upholding entitlements to property- even allowing people to divorce in an informed and reasonable way.
Few countries have adopted or implemented laws prohibiting violence against women, despite widespread evidence of discrimination and assault. Nearly half of the countries in south Asia, and more than 60 percent of those in the pacific, have no laws against domestic violence. Nor are there many provisions against sexual harassment in work places, though 30-40 percent experiencing verbal, physical or sexual abuse.

IN AUTISM
The former president of India Dr APJ Abdul kalam urged researchers to focus on isolating the main caused of autism and spectrum disorders using the latest diagnostic technologies. Identifying the genetic and environmental factors that cause autism is the key to imparting proper training to children with special needs. The study of the brain structure could be done more efficiently with advanced diagnostic facilities. In addition environmental factors- such as the impact of joint/ nuclear family on autism must also be studied.
“ Mapping the brain structure of some one with autism will also provide opportunities to diagnose the condition better and fashion better treatment and training methodologies. Special psychological package based on evidence from the research and experimental learning of mothers, teacher and care givers could be evolved to train children.
Any disorder in the human faculty leads to greater dependence on others and consequently the lowering of self esteem. There is a need to infuse a sense of equality in to the life of these children, and the way to do that would be to focus on early diagnosis engage them. Technology, mathematical simulation and bio-engineering to work towards optimally involving a child with special needs.
While there have been heartening signs of improvement in levels of awareness. It is clearly insufficient. India has simply not done enough to respond to the needs of all children, especially children with special needs. The Right to Education Act makes punishable by law any attempt to deny children with disabilities admission in schools. But there is a big gap between the law on paper and its practice. We must have a vision of the organizations to provide holistic care for children with special needs.

THOUSANDS OFFER PONGALA(2010)

THOUSANDS OFFER PONGALA(2010)
Tens of thousands of women offered pongala at the Attukal Bhagavathy temple on Sunday 28th February 2010, making the climate of the annual festival. The Attukal Pongala, recognized by the Guinness Book of world Records as the largest congregation of women in the world.. Thousands of women devotees spread across 22 municipal wards in the city lit the small hearths they had sept up on road sides and in houses to cook rise and jaggery which is offered to the presiding deity of ancient temple.
The flame from the sacred hearth inside the temple precincts was passed on quickly to several directions. By evening hundreds of priests fanned out across the city to consecrate the devotee's pongala by sprinkling holy water on the offering.
The annual pongala festival at the Attukal Bhagavathy temple billed as the largest congregation of women in the world, has always fascinated foreigners. Mrs Cary, professor of economics in Cornell university said that “ It is fascinating of this type so far” we have heard about the festival from friends and we wanted to witness it with our naked eyes. It is an atmosphere of good will. It is heartening to see women coming together and offering the rituals and men extending all support to them” Pongala as lively festival. It's very rare to see festival just for women. I have never seen such a festival and there is nothing to compare”
Marga wrobel from Germany said” I think it is a very sweet legend you have behind pongala, about calming an angry goddess by offering her sweet meal. It is really amazing. I mean so many women coming together to offer a meal for goddess is something very unique. I think this is amazing and spiritual at the same time. The women here are very determined and empowered. There is also a sense of togetherness” It was an unforgettable experience.
Residents association, voluntary agencies, political outfits and social and cultural organizations view with one another to give free food and drinks to the thousands of devotes who offered pongala to the presiding deity of the Attukal Bhagavathy temple. TRIBUTE TO KOCHIN HANEEFA
TRIBUTE TO KOCHIN HANEEFA
The departure of Kochin Haneefa is like the suden and unexpected exit of a character in the middle of a play. As a noted actor, director a ceneartist and producer, he was very active both in Malayalam and Tamil film industries for more than three decades.
In his own words” I played several roles in life: actor, writer, scenarist, director and politician. But I loved acting above all.I appear before you, changing through time and your tastes.
Kochin Haneefa was many things at the same time. Though he was one of the first products of Kalabhavan to enter films, his acting was not defined by the 'mimicry. He entered film playing villain roles, but ended up as a comedian. And even when he shifted to comedy in Malayalam, he was an acclaimed villain in Tamil films.
Even as a college student Haneefa had made his mark as an actor, and like many others he too was lured by cinema and went to chennai to pursue his dreams. His acting debut was in Azhimukham in 1972 as boat man.
The second turning point in his career was 'Kireedom( Sibi Malayil) 1989 in which he played the role of a village ruffian who is a coward. This role that combined the villain and comedian.
He was a noted actor in
Tamil also, though his acting career spanned more than three decades from Azhimukham 1972 to Body guard (2010) and he made notable contributions in various fields.
